What’s the big deal with Facebook?

February 4 marks the fourth anniversary of Facebook. Founded by a Harvard student, Facebook was originally limited to college students; today anyone above the age of 13 can join.

So what is so fabulous about Facebook?

More than 60 million people have a Facebook profile and the site’s traffic is in the top 10 according to Alexa.

People are using Facebook to find friends from their past, stay connected with those in their circle and get introduced to those who may be able to help their career.

I created my own Facebook profile to see what all of the rage is about. While I haven’t landed any new business for Snackbox based on my Facebook connections, I have created an exciting community that allows me to stay in touch with friends and strengthen relationships that may not have existed after a project ended.

While I’d love to claim that I pass time on Facebook in an effort to grow my business, the truth is, the site has become more of a public display of my interests, my aptitude at movie trivia and how my friends rank me in appearance, personality, etc.

It’s like high school all over again. And, I’m completely addicted.

I have never used facebook. Maybe we will have to give it a try. I feel that we make a lot of head way on MySpace. People come in saying they are friends with us on that site.

Facebook, MySpace and the like really got big, in my opinion, in 2004 and 2005. I finally subcombed to the craze this past June. I was going on a trip with 40 complete strangers and the trip organizer created a Facebook group. Obviously I wanted to see who else was going on this trip, so I joined Facebook and the particular group.

Well, I have mixed feelings. I now have 206 friends on Facebook. Let me tell you, I do not have 206 friends. I don’t even have 106 friends. I don’t plan to ever get in touch with 90 percent of these people. I don’t know why I requested to be their friend or why they did the same for me.

I know many people who are on Facebook for hours each day. I admit is addictive. After I spend some time on the site, I think to myself, “Self, am I a better person for what I just did?” The obvious answer is no.

Part of me wants to cancel my Facebook profile. Then, the other part thinks its stupid. Sigh.
